Living Abroad and Not Finding Yourself: Gestalt Therapy in Barcelona for Expats

Silueta de hombre frente a una ventana, terapia Gestalt en Barcelona para expats

If you’re looking for Gestalt therapy Barcelona expats, there’s something I want you to know before you book your first session.

You probably arrived in Barcelona carrying some version of hope.

A new city, a new chapter. Maybe a job, a relationship, or just the feeling that something had to change. And at some point, once the excitement settled, something followed you here anyway.

That anxious loop you thought you’d left behind. The feeling of never quite belonging. The sense that you’re doing everything right, but something still doesn’t fit.

It’s not Barcelona’s fault. It’s not yours either.

What happens with understanding your problems

Most of us are surprisingly good at analyzing ourselves. We know what our childhood was like. We know why we react the way we do. We know we should set boundaries, stop overthinking everything, stop apologizing for everything.

And yet, nothing changes.

That distance between knowing something and actually feeling it differently is exactly where Gestalt therapy lives.

It’s not about digging through your past for its own sake. It’s about noticing how the past is still alive right now: in how you tense up when someone criticizes you, in the silence you keep when you actually want to speak, in the tiredness that has no clear reason.

Understanding is the first step. But understanding alone doesn’t set you free.

What actually happens in a session

There’s no homework to take with you. No worksheets to fill in.

Sessions are conversations, but not casual ones. They move.

I might pay attention to something you mention in passing that you’d never said out loud before. We might stay with a feeling long enough for something to actually change, not just get named and filed away.

We work with what shows up in the present: what you feel in your body when you talk about something, not just what you think about it. The Gestalt approach is holistic: it treats you as a whole person, not a collection of symptoms.

Over time, the goal isn’t to fix you. You don’t need fixing. The goal is to understand what’s holding the patterns that exhaust you in place, so that at some point you can choose something different.

Why I understand the expat experience: Gestalt therapy Barcelona expats

The weight I was carrying came with me, as it usually does. The loneliness. Comparing myself to everyone around me. Feeling like a stranger even in places I’d already been a hundred times. It took therapy — Gestalt therapy — for me to start understanding what that weight really was, and why I’d carried it for so long.

That experience shapes how I work. I understand what it means to build a life far from what’s familiar. To function in a language that isn’t your own. To feel like you’re moving forward and yet stuck in something you can’t quite name.

I trained as a therapist at the Institut Gestalt in Barcelona, and today I combine that training with my own experience of migrating — something that runs through every Gestalt therapy Barcelona expats session I accompany.

Many of my clients are expats or foreigners living in Barcelona, or online from elsewhere in Europe. That context matters: not as a label, but as part of who you are right now. If you also came from Latin America, this might resonate too: therapy for Latin Americans in Europe.

This might be for you if…

— You’ve done therapy before and felt like you just talked about things, without anything really changing.
— You recognize your patterns clearly. You just can’t break them.
— You feel disconnected: from yourself, from the life you’re leading, from others.
— You’re in the middle of a transition: a new city, a breakup, a career change, a stage that doesn’t look like what you expected.
— You want to understand yourself more deeply, not just feel better for a while.

And honestly, this might not be for you if…

Gestalt has its own pace. It’s not built for quickly managing symptoms. If you’re looking for structured tools and techniques to apply right away, there are excellent approaches for that — CBT, for instance, or solution-focused therapy. They’re good. They’re just different.

Gestalt is for people willing to sit with discomfort long enough to understand it. That’s not for everyone, and I’d rather be honest about that from the start.

The first step is just a conversation

If any of this resonates, you don’t need to have it figured out before writing to me.

Most people don’t, when they first reach out. They just know something isn’t working, and they’re ready to look at it differently.

Message me — in Spanish or English — to talk about where you’re at, what you’re looking for, and whether it makes sense for us to work together.
